Fired And Unashamed: Lunch Lady Tries To Help Hungry Kids

Would you fire your lunch lady for doing what she felt was right??

Della Curry, the former kitchen manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School in Aurora in Denver, Colorado, was fired last Friday for giving away free lunches to hungry students who didn’t have money. Curry, who often felt as though the lunch provided to students who forgot or didn’t have lunch money was not sufficient and sometimes would pay for kids meals out of her own pocket.

Cherry Creek School District released the following statement about KCNC’s story:

“The law does not require the school district to provide the meal to children who have forgotten their lunch money, that is a district decision. According to our practice, we provide hot meals to students the first three times they forget their lunch money and charge their parents’ accounts. The fourth time, we provide a cheese sandwich and milk.”

… just a cheese sandwich??

Curry told CBS Denver station KCNC-TV…

“I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch. I’ll own that I broke the law. The law needs to change.”

Hopefully Della’s story will help bring change with regards to the lunch that is provided to students in that school district as well as other places!! Keep sticking up for what you believe in Della!!!
