Yes, a real lawyer, in 2015, just requested his client has trial by combat.

Richard A. Luthmann, a New York lawyer, and an obvious Game of Thrones fan, has asked the Staten Island Supreme Court for a trial by combat. Richard was accused of helping a client commit fraud. He believes that requesting a trial by combat is a proper response to the absurdity of the accusations made against him.

He was quoted saying:

“The allegations made by plaintiffs, aided and abetted by their counsel, border upon the criminal. As such, the undersigned (Luthmann) respectfully requests that the court permit the undersigned to dispatch plaintiffs and their counsel to the Divine Providence of the Maker for Him to exact His divine judgment once the undersigned has released the souls of the plaintiffs and their counsel from their corporeal bodies, personally and or by way of a champion.”

Trials by combat have not been used since the Middle Ages, but funny enough, they were never actually outlawed in the United States.

His request will most definitely be denied, but I respect him immensely for trying.
