Lady Gaga took the stage at the 2011 GRAMMY awards and performed ‘Born This Way.  On this night, she arrived at the awards in a giant EGG.

 

 

It was on this night, at the 54th annual GRAMMY awards that the entire music industry grieved the loss of Whitney Houston, who suddenly passed away the night before.  Jennifer Hudson was asked to pay tribute to the late Whitney and sang one of her most iconic hits, ‘I Will Always Love You’ (2012).

After canceling her concert dates in 2011 because of vocal issues, it was at the 2012 GRAMMY awards that Adele returned to the stage and proved she still had that amazing talent.  She performed ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and took home a GRAMMY that night in each major category.

At the 2016 GRAMMY awards, Kendrick Lamar performed ‘The Blacker the Berry’ and Alright’, in which he referenced the death of Trayvon Martin.  He gave the audience what social media called it a ‘political-tinged performance’ and he ended with a freestyle.

This was a HUGE night for Adele … she won a total of five awards at the 59th Annual GRAMMY awards (2017) including, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Album of the Year and Record of the Year.  During her acceptance speech for Album of the Year, Adele made sure she expressed her love for Beyonce and her album, Lemonade.

Taylor Swift vs Kanye West: During Taylor’s acceptance speech at the 58th GRAMMY awards, Taylor says, “People along the way, who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame” … which is clearly a jab at Kanye.

 

That time Kayne West pulled … well … a Kanye … during Beck’s acceptance speech when he received a GRAMMY for Album of the Year

 

 

Kanye West wins his first GRAMMY! This comes after Kanye making headlines after he stormed out of the AMAs after losing ‘Best New Artist’ to country artist Gretchen Wilson (2005).

GRAMMY Facts:

 

  • May 4, 1958 – the academy hosts their first ever awards show.
  • March 16, 1971 – The GRAMMY awards goes LIVE for the first time and was hosted by Andy Williams.
  • In 1984, Michael Jackson aka The King of Pop won 8 GRAMMYs – the highest amount ever won by ONE person in a year.  And in 1980, MJ boycotted the awards after ‘Off The Wall’ didn’t receive a nomination for Album of the Year, even after all of its success.
  • In 1989, ‘Rap’ was officially recognized as a genre.  Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff won the very FIRST GRAMMY for ‘Rap Performance’.
  • Beyonce became the first female artist to take home six awards in one night (2010).
  • Adele and Christopher Cross are the only two artists in GRAMMY history to win awards in all 4 major categories.  They include Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
  • At the age of 22, Sam Smith was the second youngest artist to be nominated in all of the four major GRAMMY categories.  Mariah Carey was the other artist, achieving this goal when she was just 20 years old.
  • Iggy Azalea’s hit ‘Fancy’, which featured Charli XCX was the second all-female collaboration that received a nomination for Record of the Year.  Brandy and Monica accomplished this back in 1998 with their major hit ‘The Boy Is Mine’.
  • Beyonce is the only female artist to receive 53 GRAMMY nominations.
  • Ed Sheeran’s album, X, which was released in June of 2014 holds the record for the shortest title of any Album of the Year nominee.
  • Carrie Underwood has the most GRAMMY awards by any ‘American Idol’ alum.
  • Kanye West has a total of 21 GRAMMYs which means, he has more GRAMMYs than James Taylor, The Beatles and Barbra Streisand.
  • Meghan Trainor, which was nominated for both Record and Song of the Year wasn’t the only song about the ‘bass’ – Sir Mix-A-Lot’s ‘Baby Got Back’ won the award in 1992 for Best Rap Solo Performance.
