Shawn Mendes Opens Up to Rolling Stone About Hailey Baldwin & His Sexuality

Shawn Mendes is opening up to Rolling Stone and talks about Hailey Baldwin, his sexuality, his fear of becoming irrelevant and more!

Let’s get right into it … HAILEY BALDWIN (now Bieber) WHAT happened there?! After Shawn and Hailey were a rumoured couple at one point – they were seen walking the streets of Toronto and were photographed holding hands and laughing earlier this year at the Met Gala.  They both swore on the red carpet that they were ‘just’ friends … but were they?

According to Rolling Stone, “Though they told everyone on the red carpet they were just friends, that didn’t quite add up with the photos that emerged of them hugging in a park near Mendes’ home in Toronto. He acknowledges they were more than friends, but he’s still reluctant to call it a relationship: “I don’t even wanna put a title on it. I think it was more of a zone of limbo.””

A month following the Met Gala, Justin Bieber gets added into the mix, asks Hailey for her hand in marriage and Hailey goes on a deleting spree and deletes every and ALL pictures of Shawn off of her Instagram.  (Side Note: the Biebs even took a shot at Shawn in his song with DJ Khaled, “It ain’t that hard to choose, him or me, be for real, baby, it’s a no-brainer.”

So how does Shawn really feel about Hailey’s new man (and life)? Shawn told Rolling Stone, “I get it, you know.  I texted Hailey, ‘Congratulations,’ and I really am happy for them. She’s still one of the f***ing coolest people ever — she’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met.  I think I’m an idiot to not, you know.?.?.?.?But you can’t control your heart.”

Shawn also spoke about his sexuality, “I’d like to say I don’t care about it, but that’s not true.  This massive, massive thing for the last five years about me being gay,” he says.

Rolling Stone writes, “Examples of what he means are all over YouTube and Twitter. There are memes that pair photos of Mendes with jokes about being closeted and videos that scrutinize his gestures. On some parts of the Internet, outing him has become a spectator sport. Mendes often finds himself watching his own interviews, analyzing his voice and his body language. He’ll see an anonymous stranger comment on the way he crossed his legs once and try not to do it again. He pulls out his phone to show me his Twitter account — his name is the only recent search. “In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” he says. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.””

Following the release of the article, Shawn tweeted, “Of course i have my insecurities and struggles but that’s just one part of me. Sometimes the positive side of a story doesn’t always get fully told and I wish it had here. I love what I do and i love you guys so much.”
