The 2019 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Has Been Canceled - Here's Why!

Word on the street is – The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is cancelled.

In a new interview with The Daily Telegraph, Victoria’s Secret Angel Shanina Shaik says there won’t be a fashion show this year, “Unfortunately, the Victoria’s Secret show won’t be happening this year. It’s something I’m not used to because every year around this time I’m training like an Angel. But I’m sure in the future something will happen, which I’m pretty sure about.  I’m sure they’re trying to work on branding and new ways to do the show, because it’s the best show in the world.”  Shanina modeled in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018.

According to Fox News, “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has suffered from diminishing ratings for several years.  With reports that the 2018 show hit a record low in viewership with a 0.9 rating within the target demo of viewers between 18 and 49 years of age, with a total audience of 3.27 million.  In 2017, the show had a 1.5 in the demographic and 4.98 million total viewers.  At the show’s 2001 peak, 12.4 million viewers tuned in to see the skimpy numbers and shiny wings.”

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about this – back in May, The Wall Street Journal reported the iconic fashion show wouldn’t be televised this year.  As Fox News reports, “The brand came under fire last year when the chief marketing officer of its parent company, L Brands, Ed Razek, slammed transgender and plus-size models as not fitting in with the “fantasy” the brand tries to evoke.

At the time, Ed explained to Vogue, “It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this? Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should.  Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.”  Ed continues, “It is the only one of its kind in the world, and any other fashion brand in the world would take it in a minute, including the competitors that are carping at us.  And they carp at us because we’re the leader. They don’t talk about each other. I accept that. I actually respect it…”

Afterwards, Ed apologized and issued a public statement: “My remark regarding the inclusion of transgender models in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show came across as insensitive. I apologize. To be clear, we absolutely would cast a transgender model for the show. We’ve had transgender models come to castings… And like many others, they didn’t make it… But it was never about gender. I admire and respect their journey to embrace who they really are.”

It seems as though people are still upset over Ed’s statement – and for good reason.  As of right now, no air-date has been issued and the show’s cancellation still stands.
