Here are five 2SLGBTQ+ themed movies to watch this month!

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert (1994)

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert is a comedy film about three 2SLGBTQ+ friends (Anthony, Adam and Bernadette) who take a drag show gig performing in a desert in Australia. They board a bus named Priscilla to head out on the road trip where many misadventures occur, along with people that are accepting and not so accepting of the drag queens. The friendship between the three is tested when they learn the real truth why Anthony took the job.

Pariah (2011)

Pariah follows 17 year old Alike, who lives a double life. She’s a normal female teenager while at home under her mother Audrey’s watchful eye, but when out with her friend Laura: begins to explore masculine presentation and lesbian culture. Alike then meets a girl from church Bina, where they quickly discover they have more in common than expected. Pariah is a relevant example of the struggle when a child is not accepted by their family for who they are.

The Way He Looks (2014)

A Brazilian movie (w/subtitles for Canadian release), The Way He Looks follows the story of Leo and Gabriel, two teenagers navigating the trials and tribulations of their first love. Leo, who is blind, always walks home from school with his best friend Giovana, however when Gabriel comes to town and starts to accompany Leo home, romance occurs between the two. The Way He Looks is one of few 2SLGBTQ+ movies that tell a story through disabled people, remaining impactful to its audiences.

Moonlight (2016)

You’ve very likely seen Moonlight by now, but if not: it is a must watch, especially over Pride Month. Moonlight follows main character Chiron, through three stages of life: as a young boy, teenager in Miami, and an adult in Atlanta. Watch his journey to manhood faced with some challenges from the community around him. Especially when exploring his sexuality and personal identity, and addiction.

Disclosure: Trans Lives On Screen (2020)

This original documentary from Netflix shows Hollywood icons sharing their experiences as a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ Transgender community. Featuring notable actors/actresses including Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachowski, and Chaz Bono, Disclosure explores trans representation and misrepresentation throughout the decades. It’s an eye opening realization into how far we still have to becoming an accepting community for all.
