Kevin Spacey Is Getting Cut Out of His Upcoming Film & Facing a Police Investigation

Amid the mounting allegations of sexual assault against Kevin Spacey, the actor is now being completely cut out of the upcoming film All the Money in the World. The film, which was directed by Ridley Scott, is sticking to its original Dec. 22 release date, but will reshoot all of Spacey’s scenes with Christopher Plummer taking over the role.

A trailer for the film, which details the true story of the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, was released in September, showing shots of Spacey in the lead role of Jean Paul Getty. The film was wrapped, but Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams, who also appear in the film will now reportedly be helping reshoot scenes with Plummer in place of Spacey.

In addition to being cut out of the upcoming film, Spacey is now also facing a police investigation following the alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old man last summer on Nantucket. Heather Unruh, the former news anchor and the alleged victim’s mother, broke the news in an emotional press conference and added that her son reported the incident to Nantucket police last week.

The accusations against Spacey began when actor Anthony Rapp spoke out with allegations that Spacey sexually assaulted him when he was just 14.

More men soon come forward with allegations against Spacey—including eight current and former House of Cards employees.

These employees spoke to CNN, but remained anonymous because they were afraid of the potential repercussions for their careers. The House of Cards employees allege that Spacey’s behaviour on set was “predatory” and included making crude comments or touching people without their consent. They described the work environment Spacey created as “toxic” and said that his actions were typically targeted towards young male crew members.

These allegations from the set of House of Cards come only days after Mexican actor Robert Cavazos wrote on Facebook that Spacey tried to grope him against his will at London’s Old Vic theatre. Spacey was the artistic director at the British theatre from 2004 to 2015.

Translated from Spanish, Cavazos wrote: “It was more common for this guy, when he was in the bar of his theatre, grabbing whoever caught his attention. I didn’t stand for it, but I know some people who were afraid to stop it.”

Cavazos also wrote that stories about Spacey’s inappropriate behaviour were “so common that it even became a local joke (in very bad taste).”

“I don’t remember how many people told me the same story: Spacey invited them to meet him to ‘talk about their careers,’” he shared on Facebook.  

On Oct. 31, filmmaker Tony Montana told Radar Online that Spacey groped him at a Los Angeles bar in 2003. Montana alleges that Spacey came to the bar with friends when he was editing a documentary and grabbed his crotch.

“I went up to order a drink and Kevin came up to me and put his arm around me,” Montana told the outlet. “He was telling me to come with him, to leave the bar. He put his hand on my crotch forcefully and grabbed my whole package.”

Montana says Spacey then said to him, “This designates ownership.” After pushing Spacey’s hand off him and walking away, Montana alleges that Spacey followed him to the bathroom.

“I backed him out the door and I pushed him,” Montana said. “One of his friends was in line and I said, ‘It’s time to take your boy home. ‘They all ended up leaving.’”

The new allegations come after Rapp’s interview with BuzzFeed News, where the actor alleges that in 1986, 26-year-old Spacey invited him to a party at his apartment and tried to “seduce” the teen once the other partygoers had left.

Following the news of Rapp’s allegations, Netflix and Media Rights Capital has suspended production of House of Cards Season 6 “until further notice, to give [the companies] time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of [the] cast and crew,” the parties said in a joint statement released Tuesday. This news comes one day after the announcement that Season 6 will be the final season of House of Cards, though the show was cancelled prior to Rapp’s allegations against Spacey.

Rapp first met Spacey when they were both working on Broadway—Rapp on Precious Sons and Spacey on Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Rapp told BuzzFeed that Spacey first invited him and a friend to popular NYC nightclub Limelight, despite Rapp being just 14. At some point in the night, Spacey invited Rapp to a party at his apartment a few days later. When Rapp arrived at the party, he quickly realized that he was the only child in attendance and that he didn’t know anyone, though these were both aspects of his job he’d grown accustomed to as a child actor. After growing bored, Rapp located a TV in a bedroom in Spacey’s house and spent the rest of the night there.

At some point, Spacey appeared in the bedroom doorway, and Rapp realized that the other guests had all left. “My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,” Rapp said. Spacey “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk. He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me. He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp said. “I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Rapp went on to say, “The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn’t happen. And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can’t believe it. I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy.” Rapp told BuzzFeed that he considered talking to Spacey about what happened, but he never did. He also thought about telling his mother, but that would require him to speak about his own sexual orientation—something he wasn’t yet ready to do.

Hours after Rapp’s interview was published on Sunday night, Spacey posted a statement to Twitter stating that he does not remember the encounter, but that, if it did happen, he’s sorry for his “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” In the same statement, Spacey revealed that he is choosing “now to live as a gay man.”

Spacey and his team have artfully used his coming out to deflect from Rapp’s allegations, dangerously altering the narrative and effectively conflating homosexuality with pedophilia. As Ira Madison III so eloquently writes for The Daily Beast, “Here, Spacey has changed the narrative of him allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old boy, put on Jamie Foxx’s ‘Blame it on the Alcohol,’ and ended it with, ‘Oh, by the way, I’m gay!’” The New York Daily News and ABC News were some of  of many media outlets to fall for Spacey’s shift in the narrative, focusing their coverage of the situation on Spacey’s sexuality as opposed to his alleged assault against a 14-year-old.

An angry Twitter storm has ensued since Spacey shared his statement. While some users are mad that he mentions his drunkenness in an attempt to extinguish his culpability, most are furious that he chose this moment to come out as gay.

In a series of tweets late Sunday night, Rapp shared his hopes that his story would encourage others to do the same and declined to comment any further about Spacey’s deeply problematic statement.
