It’s a known fact that during certain circumstances, some people tend to turn to humour to cope with life tragedies, like the passing of a loved one.  In Pete Davidson’s defence, he lost his father during 9/11 and he was also close with other victims who have been apart of violent tragedies and according to a source, “He’s [Pete] obviously sensitive to tragedy as he lost his own father and his intention is to just make people laugh – this is his way of coping, he turns to humour.”

Now during a stand-up benefit show (to help support Puerto Rico) that was held last fall, Pete had made a comment on his now fiancé, Ariana Grande.  He joked, “Britney Spears didn’t have a terrorist attack at her concert,” which he was obviously referencing the Manchester attack that took place during Ariana’s concert last May and killed 22 people and also injured over 800.

Unfortunately, the joke resurfaced by Charlotte Hodgon, who lost her 15-year old daughter, Olivia Campbell-Hardy during the attack.  Charlotte told the Mirror, “His joke was disgusting – We don’t need jokes about it, there have been plenty around, and it’s heartbreaking to hear every day. But for someone so famous to be doing it and now to be with Ariana, it’s outrageous.”

Three days after Charlotte publicly announced the joke, a fan tweeted Ariana, asking why she would still be engaged to Pete.  The tweet read, “I respect Ariana and I want her to be happy and everything, but she was just broken after the Manchester bombing, so I don’t know why she is still with Pete, like yeah he made that joke a while ago, but like it’s not funny, it’s just rude. This is my opinion,”

The following day, Ariana responded,

The sad part of it all – a little over a year had passed and Ariana told British Vogue that she was ‘still suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome’ and opened up about her PTSD, “It’s hard to talk about because so many people have suffered such severe, tremendous loss.”

We have yet to hear from Pete but it looks as though Ariana has forgiven him and all is still well between the newly-engaged couple.
