Peterborough Community Raises 100k After Town's Only Mosque is Burned Down

Late Saturday night, the only Mosque in Peterborough was deliberately set on fire in an idiotic response to the Paris attacks. Days later, the community has rallied together to raise nearly 100k for the Mosque.

The Peterborough Examiner reported over the weekend that the Mosque, Masjid Al-Salaam, suffered damage of about $80,000 when it was set on fire. They said, “the building suffered heavy smoke damage inside, with little damage evident outside. Damage is estimated at $80,000, fire officials said.”

Members of the Mosque were obviously shocked. Many took to Facebook to share their feelings of the situation:

Peterborough Police, confirmed that it was an act of arson and reported on the seriosuness of the situation: “Offences such as this, committed in relation to a place of Worship are taken very seriously and the Police Service will make every attempt to determine who is responsible.”

Duane Rousselle, a resident of Peterborough, started the campaign for Masjid Al-Salaam and he is shocked at the results. He told Buzzfeed, “Some of the very large donations were made anonymous — one for $2,000, a couple for $1,000. That is remarkable. What is most touching, I think is that many of the donors are living in poverty. They donated large sums of money nonetheless.”
