Lizzo Calls Out Internet Troll for His Weight-Shaming: "The Only Person Who Needs to do Better Is You!"

Lizzo feels NO WAYS in clapping back at the internet trolls!  Dr. Boyce Watkins, an author, political analyst, economist and social commentator claimed, via Twitter, Lizzo’s popularity is part of ‘America’s obesity epidemic.’

In a tweet, Dr. Watkins writes, “#Lizzo is popular because there is an obesity epidemic in America.  Rather than encouraging people to do better, we are simply lying to them and telling them that they are just fine the way they are.  Unfortunately, many of these people are dying from diabetes and heart disease.”

Lizzo replied, “I’m popular because I write good songs and I’m talented and perform high energy hour and a half shows filled with love.  The only people who needs to do better is you.  Keep my name out ya mouth and look in the mirror before you come for me.  Here’s the attention you ordered.”

The following day, Dr. Watkins responded, “I would never disagree with the fact that you are extremely talented.  But you are naïve if you think White people would be buying your records if you were also overweight, raunchy and fulfilling a racist stereotype.  Many #blackpeople are uncomfortable with your performance.” 

Four days later, Dr. Watkins tweets, “I’m still getting tweets like ‘Leave #Lizzo alone!’ – America loves to protect toxic feminist mammyism.  Maybe we should talk about #reparations and education instead of fighting for the right to go to Lakers games with your body out.”

This dude reminds me of those Facebook commentators who don’t care if they’re right or wrong – they just want to be heard because they ‘think’ they’re important.

Although Lizzo has yet to respond to Dr. Watkins’ recent tweets, in a previous interview with Entertainment City, she explained, “It took me a long time to be self-confident and I think it’s because I had to see the superstar in me, because I didn’t have a superstar to look up to.  Body positivity, to me, is the opposite of body negativity, which is this thing that the media has kind of created in order to sell a product, and it seems pretty harmless… but it’s hurt so many people.  We can change the world by learning to love ourselves first.”
