The decision was announced on the club’s official site, “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.  The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.  Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch,” it reads.

Cristiano later confirmed the news, sharing a statement via Twitter, “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change.  However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.  I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”

Cristiano joined Manchester back in 2021 and his contract wasn’t set to expire until summer 2023.  His exit comes after his interview with Piers Morgan, where he revealed how ‘betrayed’ he felt by the team’s head coach and its executives, “Yes, I felt betrayed and I felt like some people don’t want me here, not only this year, but last year too.”  During the interview, Cristiano shared how he had ‘no respect’ for Eric ten Hag, the team manager.

Following Cristiano’s interview, the league released a statement saying, “Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.  The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.  Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans.”
