Tens of thousands of people are using the new Companion app to get home safely.

Five students from the University of Michigan created a new app called Companion to help people get home safely.

The new Companion app allows users to be virtually walked home by friends and family by sending a request to their phones. The app uses a GPS navigating system to pin point exactly where the user is.

If the app detects anything unusual like getting their ear phones yanked out of their phone the app automatically asks the user if they are okay. The user then has 15 seconds to respond to the app and if they don’t respond the phone turns into an alarm system, making a loud sound hopefully scaring off the criminal and gives the user an option to call the police.

With the new update the user now has the option of pressing the “I am nervous” button which lets the app know when and where the user feels unsafe. The creators plan on taking this information and using it to inform more campus security where they are most needed on campus in the future.
